This could be the year your roofing company sees more requests for bright colors, at least where metal roofing is concerned. According to some sources, blues, reds, whites, and other vivid colors could become the rage in 2018.

A Vivid 2018!
This trend appears to be all about going beyond the traditional grays, browns, and other neutral hues. According to the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA):
“In years past, the tendency has been towards earth tones and subtle colors that blend in. This year, homeowners are seeking out bolder shades that draw attention and make their home distinctive,” said Renee Ramey, executive director of the MRA. “People are getting creative and they are finding that the latest shades of metal roofing options allow them to do just that.”
In addition, MRA mentions that Pantone (the organization many designers look to for a unified color tone system) has named Ultra Violet the color tone of the year, so don’t be surprised if you get a call or two about purple as well! MRA also points to copper, stainless steel, and titanium as innovative alternatives that are striking and trendy, though not as intense.
Not everyone agrees on the trend, of course, especially outside the metal roofing sector. For example, Owens Corning has named a decidedly neutral tone the shingle color of the year: Dune. You can’t get much more neutral than this palate of “bisque beige, driftwood, shale, and charcoal”; but even this is accompanied by something a bit unexpected: “a touch of light sky blue”.
Coming to a Town Near You?
Overall, there does appear to be an uptick in interest for rooftops more in line with what you’ll see in cities like Valparaiso, Chile and Reykjavik, Iceland.
It’s pretty hard to argue with the colorful charm of these cities! If the predictions hold for 2018, we’ll start seeing more colorful housing in more locations, at least from the aerial view!
Also, as innovations like drones become more mainstream, who knows, maybe having a brightly colored roof could become even more trendy with some customers!
Thoughts on Meeting Customer Demand
Whether or not you’ll get a lot of requests for color roofing options largely depends on your roofing clients:
- Are your customers innovative and likely to try out an on-trend roof?
- Also, since this is a newer trend and these materials will likely cost more, at least at the outset.: are your clients typically equipped to splurge for something like a brighter color?
