For some business owners, leadership is easy. It’s not hard for them to inspire, manage, and grow. For others, however, leadership doesn’t come quite so naturally. Regardless of where you land on the spectrum, everyone can use tips to sharpen their leadership skills.
That’s why we’ve compiled four practices that can help you lead better today. If you apply these principles, you’ll find that your employees are more unified and your business can be more successful.
1. Have a Shared Vision
What is a shared vision? Simply put, it’s when everyone on the team understands the goals of the company and how their roles contribute to achieving the goals. It inspires people because they understand the impact company goals will have. Are you trying to become the number one roofer in your county, or become the largest employer in your town? Having a long-term view will guide your business decisions and determine your path for achieving each goal.
How do you make sure the vision is shared throughout the organization? Sharing it clearly with your team and making sure they understand their role is essential to accomplishing your goals. Discuss the details of your vision at each meeting, during every training, and even in job interviews. It should be woven into the fabric of your employee journey, beginning to end.
JobNimbus holds weekly company meetings where goals are shared, work is accounted for, and company priorities are reviewed. Company mission and values are re-emphasized at least weekly for every employee, which creates a shared vision.
2. Facilitate Zen Moments
Have you ever had a moment when your whole team seemed unified, when everyone was firing on all cylinders? That’s your “zen moment!”
Prioritize having a culture of collaboration and synergy within your team. Set the example by meeting regularly with employees of all kinds, not just other leaders. Sit down for lunch with your office workers or get coffee with your installers. Use these moments to understand your employees and work more closely with them.
When your employees feel like you care for them and their work, you’ll find that zen moment happens much more often.
3. Create Your System of Success
As a leader, there are a lot of demands on your time. You have employees to manage, projects to complete, and a host of other duties. How in the world do you manage it all?
That’s where systems can make a difference. Systems are a predetermined set of practices that help you achieve your goals. If you don’t have a system of success in place, life can feel chaotic, and that’s not fun for anyone!
Software is one of the most effective tools for systems of organization. A roofing software like JobNimbus can take complicated situations and boil them down to simple, actionable steps. Definite your system and you’ll find that your communication and organization are much more efficient, and you’ll be more successful.
4. Discover Your “Why”
Every business should have a purpose, a great reason for doing the work. That purpose is often called your “why.” Having a “why” matters because if there isn’t a great reason to be in business, you’ll falter when times get tough.
So what’s your “why”? A great way to find it is by understanding your benefits. What positive impacts occur because of what your people do? What benefits motivate your team the most? Make a list and determine the biggest, most motivating benefit. At that point, you’ve likely found your “why”.
It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day aspects of running a business and forget some of the simple steps you can take to help it grow. Defining your vision and your “why”, creating solid processes, and striving for zen moments are just some of the things you can do to take your business to the next level.
