The tool’s inventor, Mladen Barbaric, remarks, “the tape measure hasn’t changed since 1869.” With this in mind, along with the inherent issues that come from trying to use rulers and tape measures to measure not straight surfaces, he developed the concept.
The InstruMMents 01 is a pen-shaped measuring device (dimensioning, according to Barbaric) with a laser guide that pulls its measurements as you roll the edge of the device across/around a surface.
The system works much like a handheld surveyor’s wheel, just on a small scale. With a turn of the wheel, it is able to capture measurements in increments of 0.1mm, though the companion app can do quick conversions between metric and imperial units.
While it might not beat the measuring tape at gauging the length of a full wall, it can be more exact with shorter items and get you extra features that will surely boost your productivity:
- Precise measurements
- Length, depth, and height
- Measure curved surfaces
- Laser guide
- Blink intervals
- Companion app
- Syncs measurements automatically
- Add notes & photo to each measurement for reference
- Convert measurements
- Scale units (perfect for matching blueprint sketches to real construction measurements)
- Share measurements
- Optional Extras: Pen, Pencil, Stylus, Go (lanyard)
With features like these, plus much more coming in the future, the InstruMMents 01 seems like the start of a brand new revolution in measurement and dimensioning.
