You may have noticed we haven’t had too many new features to announce lately. Don’t worry, all is well here at JobNimbus, and you can rest assured that we are working as hard as ever for you. There are indeed new features yet to be announced.

But, to put it plainly, for the past several months we’ve been working incredibly hard to rebuild our QuickBooks sync structure from the ground up. This process has been long, but the results will be spectacular, making for a stronger and faster framework that’s less prone to error, as well as giving us the ability to support more features and objects for syncing in the future.

Today we’ve reached a big milestone in this development cycle with the release of the QuickBooks Web Connector for syncing Contacts and Vendors between JobNimbus and QuickBooks. In the coming weeks we will be adding Jobs, Estimates, and Invoices to this list as well.

This first change will affect QuickBooks Desktop users the most, as this will mean that they will need to do some things to make the transition properly.

Important: QuickBooks Sync Manager will be discontinued

If your JobNimbus account is currently integrated with QuickBooks Desktop, then there’s an important change that requires action on your part. Please continue reading for more information.

What’s happening and why

If you’re using QuickBooks Desktop, the Intuit Sync Manager is the technology component of QuickBooks Desktop that you’re currently using to connect your QuickBooks data with your JobNimbus data. Intuit has announced that they plan to discontinue the Sync Manager on March 1, 2016. You should have already received a notice directly from Intuit related to this change. In anticipation of this event, we’ve been hard at work integrating with a more reliable and flexible component called the Intuit Web Connector.

Since this change is coming up, we want to help you understand some of the basic differences between the Sync Manager and the Web Connector and to outline your options for transitioning to the Web Connector.

Common Questions

How is the Web Connector different from the Sync Manager?
From a high level, the Sync Manager stored a copy of your QuickBooks data on one of Intuit’s servers. Any data that needed to be synced between JobNimbus and QuickBooks would have to travel through this middle “copy” of your data. This was an unstable architecture and lead to conflicted records and other issues. In contrast the Web Connector does not use a middle sync server but instead sends and receives data directly from your QuickBooks Desktop computer to JobNimbus.

Why is Intuit discontinuing the Sync Manager?
From our understanding, and based on the numerous problems we experienced while working with our customers who were using the Sync Manager, it appears as though the Sync Manager had numerous stability and other issues (i.e. conflicted records, server outages, difficult to support). While we aren’t clear on the exact reasons, it appears as though Intuit made the decision to discontinue support for the Sync Manager because they felt they could not properly fix the issues and limitations that customers were experiencing.

Does the Web Connector sync the same information as the Sync Manager?
Eventually it will. Our current implementation supports syncing quickBooks Customers and Vendors. Over the next few weeks, we plan to include support for Jobs, Estimates and Invoices.

Does the Web Connector integration offer any additional functionality?
Yes! We’ve taken the opportunity to make a some improvements which we know many of you will be very excited about. Some of them include:

  • Support for mapping the QuickBooks “Display Name” to the JobNimbus record number
  • Support for syncing invoice payments
  • Support for syncing Vendors and Subcontractors
  • Ability to map QuickBooks Reps to JobNimbus Sales Reps
  • Multi-location syncing

What are my options?

You have 4 options:

1. Migrate to QuickBooks Online Edition (recommended)
Intuit announced that their QuickBooks Online sales have surpassed their QuickBooks Desktop sales. We believe that over time, they’ll be giving less attention and focus to their Desktop editions of QuickBooks in favor of their Online platform. The discontinuation of the Sync Manager is evidence of this. Many of our customers have already switched and are glad they’ve done so. If you’ve been hesitant to switch in the past because their Online edition lacked functionality you need, it’s worth taking another look. Intuit continues to add new functionality to their Online platform and we’re now to the point that it’s rare for us to find one of our customers that can’t switch because of functionality reasons. To explore this route, please call the QuickBooks migration hotline at 1-800-488-7330 to discuss your migration options with a QuickBooks Online expert. If you decide to go this route, please reply to this email to let us know.

2. Transition to the Web Connector now
If you only need to sync Contacts and/or Vendors, please contact us as soon as possible to schedule your migration. Our current Web Connector implementation should provide you with a much better experience than what you’re experiencing with the Sync Manager. To schedule your migration, please reply to this email to let us know that you’re ready to switch now and we’ll follow up with additional instructions.

3. Transition to the Web Connector later
If you depend on Job, Estimate or Invoice records to be synced, please reply to this email as soon as possible and let us know. Over the coming weeks as we release support for these record types, we’ll get back in touch with you to schedule your transition.

4. Do nothing
If you no longer wish to have JobNimbus sync with QuickBooks, please reply to this email and let us know. We’ll be happy to safely disconnect your QuickBooks integration so that this migration doesn’t affect your account.

What if I’m hosting QuickBooks with a third party?

If you’re hosting QuickBooks with a third party (ex: Right Networks) and you don’t plan to switch to QuickBooks Online, you’ll want to contact your third party provider as soon as possible to let them know that you’ll be migrating to a new Web Connector application soon. They may need to perform additional steps on their end to support you and avoid any interruptions with your service.
